Chapter Fourteen

Eliora's POV

Urgh!

My head hurts, I yawned loudly pulling the duvet away from my body, I turned sideway and saw Jennifer sleeping soundly.

I gradually roll towards the edge to reach for my phone when it beeped.

"Final Year Result is OUT!"

"What! So fast?" I couldn't believe my eyes as I sat upright on my bed to read the latest school news.

Based on the news, we would be graduating next Saturday and were advised to settle our tuition clearance.

I sluggishly walked to the bathroom to wash my face and brush then I wore a rather bogus clothe and left the house.

Hurriedly walking to the board where our result was been pasted, I saw few of my colleagues already struggling between themselves in search of their names and grade, I stood at the back afraid to make a move.

What if I failed? What if after all the promised marks at the end I remain at third class division?

Still on my thoughts, Nathan tapped me and I return to reality.

"Are you okay?" Nathan asked.

"Yeah" I nodded.

"Have you checked your result?" Nathan asked.

"No" I shook my head sadly.

"Are you nervous?" Nathan asked and I nod.

"You've made it already" Nathan assured sweetly.

"Thanks Nat" I smiled and pull through the crowd.

In as much as I was mad at Nathan, it was our final and it isn't ethical as matured people to graduate as enemies, I let go of the pass and accepted him as a neutral friend.

Searching through the long list for my result, I saw...

"Eliora Ganes

"Woah!!!" I squealed. I screamed. I yelled like a loosed castrated dog, the hall turn quiet as they all turn to me anxiously but I didn't care, my result kept me highly astonished. As I scream, I jumped with smile on my face.

"It's a first class! It's a first class!" I shouted in repetition and my colleagues pushed themselves in other to see my result.

"You did it girl" Nathan embraced me tightly and I exhaled on his shoulder.

"It wasn't easy man. I feel like some burdens are off me" I said.

"We are free now" Nathan patted my back as I gradually pull away from the embrace.

"How about yours? Was it a success?" I asked anxiously.

"Yeah. Second class upper division isn't a bad thing" Nathan smiled.

"It's a cool result" I assured.

Leaving the university with smile on my face and heart full of happiness, I entered the mall closer to my estate.

I bought can soft drinks, chocolates and some pack of snacks then I headed for home.

"Gosh! I left Jennifer in my room" I remembered and hasten my footstep.

"Yes babe".

"Don't worry, I'll meet you before you leave".

"Babe! Can you hold on? I'm already leaving the house".

"Sure sure".

"I love you too".

I saw Jennifer locking her apartment door quickly with her iphone on her ear.

"Where is she headed to?" I wondered as I walk closer to her.

"Going somewhere?" I asked with smile on my face.

"Yes, yes" Jennifer said arranging some things in her huge handbag.

"Are you coming back soon?" I asked.

"Let's talk when I return. Take care Liora!" Jennifer plants soft kiss on my cheek and rushed out of the estate and I stood at a spot clueless.

I felt sad... Why am I sad? Have I gotten used to Jenny? I was feeling angry and sad at the same time... I wanted us to have some girls night and talk over movie while drinking soft drinks and eating chocolates... but my plan seem to have failed and I felt horrible.

I walked into my room with the shopping bag and lock the door from behind.

Evening came so fast and I didn't get any message from Jennifer. Not even an apology message or something... Is not as if I was waiting for it though.

I turned on the television and clicked on "Free Guy" a nice Netflix movie and as it begins, I started drinking the soft drink and the snacks quietly with my eyes on the screen.

"All in all, I'm now a graduate" at the thought of this, I smiled.

"Active Bank Balance: 100 dollars".

"What can hundred dollars do in my life?" I sighed sadly as I changed position on the armchair.

I needed to pay for my electricity bill, university clearance bill, transport fare bill and feeding bill but I have insufficient funds... and Jennifer being my only hope, it's been three days and I haven't heard from her and her line remains unavailable.

"It's seems I'm back to square one" I sighed as I walk back into my bedroom.

It's time for job hunting but I mustn't look like my problem... Right?

Walking on the bustling street, as the breeze flushed on my face I had that feelings of freedom added with chills... Was my pride acting up again?

I was dressed in a black straight gown that clearly showed my curves, in a black flat shoe and black handbag. I looked confident and smart.

I walked into a modelling hub firm, by the side of the passage wall had pictures of different female models both old and new as the pictures had dates on them, I admired it as I walk down the hall.

"Modelling job?" I sighed.

It's not really what I want but I needed quick money to clear up my university debt in the next one week, I sighed not knowing when someone approach me.

"Hello. Are you searching for something?" a lady asked politely and I lift my gaze at her.

"Oh. No. I'm" I stammered but then pause when I notice the lady had a mocking look on her face.

"Actually, I'm in search of a job" I said.

"A job?" the lady asked cryptically.

"Yeah. I'm up for cleaning job, secretary, model-on-contract" I paused.

"I'm up for any available part time job" I added.

"Oh really... And you think there's vacancy here?" the lady asked.

"I don't know" I said sheepishly which made the both of us laugh... not hard.

"Well, young lady. This is NY and you don't get a job at just one go ... It's all about connection" as she speaks, she wore a bright unbreakable smile on her face.

"So, there's no job and I'm not in position to give job... It's my boss" she adds in.

"Oh. Then can I see your boss?" I asked anxiously and she shook her head pitifully.

"He's not on sit" she said.

Stepping down from the short staircase, I sighed and proceed into the street. The sun was still residing on the sky giving light to the world, I checked my phone and it was exactly 2:30PM.

As I was about to cross to the next street, I saw some people offloading cartoned goods from a long trailer into a nearby building. The trailer had "LightSpeed Express Delivery System" and logo on the body written in bold, without hesitation I walked toward them.

"Here's off limit at the moment, please use the other route" a young man who look like he's in his late thirties said, I synchronize him with my eyes and saw the tag around his neck and on it was "MR. STEPHEN: SUPERVISOR" written in capital bold red letters.

"Hey!" Mr. Stephen calls out.

"I'm here for work" I said bluntly.

"Work?" Mr. Stephen stare at me bewildered.

"I want to work" I repeated.

"What can you carry? You're too thin" Mr. Stephen snorts.

"Try me" I boasted.

"Please don't fail me today.. pride" I said in my mind.

"Five cartons for twenty dollars" Mr. Stephen said.

"Okay sir" I said impatiently.

"Wait" Mr. Stephen stopped me as I was about collecting the company's uniform from a box.

"I'm not in charge of any hospital bills" Mr. Stephen seemed to be reminding me.

"Is the job risky?" I sighed.

"As long as I can get three hundred dollars if I carry about hundred to two hundred cartons, I'm satisfied" I said as I wear the uniform, he smirked.

"Start then" Mr. Stephen said and walk away.

"Someone should come and rescue me".

"Heyyy!! I need help".

"I'm dead".

Sitting on the bare dusty floor wild thought ran rapidly in my head as I breath heavily, I thought it wasn't some heavy carton. How can I survive this?

I haven't even been able to carry up to ten cartons... and I'm this broken.

No wonder the supervisor guy shaded himself off my medical bill because I'll be needing some massage after this.

I started regretting why I had worn my best dress... I was never planning on working as some goods off loader. My dress is wasted!

"Hey! Are you done for the day?" Mr. Stephen shouted from afar.

"No sir" I waved at him, tired and I could see him smile in mockery.

"Then continue" Mr. Stephen said persuasively.

"Yes" enthusiastically I stand from the floor walking confidently toward the trailer when everything started spinning round and round until it turned bleak.

"Are you okay?"

"What's going on?"

I heard only screams and frantic chatters.
