Chapter 22

Sad Days

"What!?" Blake shouted with his bloody eyes, he would kill even the little mosquito that dared step on him.

"Are you deaf!? What did you say!?" he yelled at Jason.

"Sir... sir..." Jason trembled frantically, unable to say any word.

If he makes the leanest, his job won't be his to keep.

"Speak up!" he pointed at Jason, vibrating like someone who just got electrocuted.

"I... It..." seeing that his words won't prove the truth, Jason walks toward the table and turns on the television using the remote.

The television screen displayed a young lady who is obviously the news reporter for the day.

"BREAKING NEWS: The only daughter to the Benson's and Ex- wife of Mr. Blake, Shirley entered a morning flight to Italy which turned out to be the only plane that crashed yesterday. This is sad news and..." Jason didn't hesitate to turn to his boss who roughly sat on the seat.

"How did this happen? Why did she? How could she!" he looked devastated and bewildered with his face folded in a deep frown.

Jason lowered his head sadly.

"I'm sorry for your loss, sir" Jason muttered cautiously in a sad tone.

"My wife can never be dead, my wife is not dead! I don't joke with my worthless belongings!" he disagreed in full vim rushing out of the office.

"Boss! Sir!" Jason followed him at a high pace.

He looked insane for a minute. But they are obviously divorced.

And in Blake's mansion, Christine looked at the television with her eyes glued to the screen. She couldn't resist the announcement on television neither does she believe it as the truth.

Emerald sadly entered the living room, and on seeing her demeanor, she frowned sadly.

Though Shirley was an overbearing character she was still loved by her family whether they hide it or not, she remains their wife, daughter and mother.

Emerald cupped Christine into her arm, and tears dropped from her eyes. She has been holding it all in and now there is an arm to cry on, she didn't joke with the chance.

"I hate her so much, why did she leave me?" Christine cried with her face buried on Emerald's chest, she gradually lifted her face looking at Emerald.

"I totally understand how you are feeling right now, please accept my condolences" she whispered softly in a calm tone with her hand stroking Christine's back.

"I hate her so much and yet I don't want her to leave me. I wanted to make her feel bad, I wanted her to feel hurt seeing her child love another woman" Christine cried out loudly while coughing uncontrollably.

"You don't have to hurt yourself even more, your mum won't be happy to see you like this" she cleaned the tears off her face but Christine continued crying profusely, her eyes started holding tears.

"I want my mummy back, I want my mummy back. Aunt Em, can you give my mummy back to me?" she said through her sniffle looking pitifully, her heart hurt seeing Christine cry bitterly.

"Your mum is in a safer place. A place of warmth and peace" she tried her best to convince and encourage Christine but it didn't seem to work, Christine could not stop herself from crying as hiccups also made it all worse.

"I'm so sorry mummy, I have been a bad daughter to you. Not even your beautiful body was seen. Mummy why?" Christine continued crying dolefully while Emerald patted her back gently, tears dropped down from her eyes.

"It's alright, sweetheart. You are hurting me already. Please stop crying, all will be well. You still have your father with you, right?" She consoled her with words of comfort and Christine impatiently embraced her tightly like she wanted to bury herself inside of Emerald.

Emerald exhaled deeply with her red teary eyes.

Evening came so fast, Emerald hoped for Blake to return home and console his daughter even more. As fate would have it, Christine had evening fever which kept Emerald running around the house like a loose chicken.

She went from the kitchen to the bathroom and down to the bedroom, taking cold fresh water, a big bowl and towel with her. She used these to soothe Christine's hot body and tucked the duvet properly around her.

"Please be alright, honey" she whispered dolefully, looking anxious and sad.

She felt so bad to see a little child distress over their loss, she felt Christine is too young to accept all these . Only if she received warmth from her late mother, the pain wouldn't have been this severe.

Giving her a last look, she left the room with the equipment she came in with into the kitchen.

Just as she was about climbing the stairs to her room since she had concluded that Blake would possibly sleep outside or drunk himself out in sorrow, Blake stumbled into the room with Jason who assisted him to walk wedging his shoulder.

"What happened to him?" with her wide open impatient, anxious and worried eyes, she questioned Jason.

"Please take him to his room, he needs to rest '' Jason passed the weight-and Blake over on her thin shoulder, she stumbled before taking a firm stand.

"Is he alright? Did something happen? Please tell me" she said insistently with her eyes rolling around Jason.

Blake wasn't smelling of alcohol, so what could have happened to a sane man?

"What do you think of a man who has lost his wife?" Jason asked rhetorically, staring at her scornfully, he wasn't willing to answer her but she made him do it.

"But.." she paused, unable to complete her statement.

"He never loved his wife..." she completed it sadly in her mind which he didn't hear.

"Mr. Blake is under your care now, take care of him. I will come check on him tomorrow ``. With that, Jason left the house and she sighed sadly.

"What a day?" She struggled with him on the stairs heading to his master bedroom.

She didn't know if she was sad about Shirley's death or the fate that Blake claimed not to love her but yet misses her badly.

"Shirley... Shirley..." these words escaped from his mouth in a low tone, his eyes were closed.
